Dry and Dehydrated Skin
No one wants cracked, dehydrated skin like the Sahara, however it’s a common skin issue that affects up to 98% of us. Dry skin can be especially bad during the depths of the winter months, so if you’re dealing with tight, chapped, rough or peeling skin, read on to find out how to sooth your skin, prevent further dehydration and get the glowing and nourished complexion you deserve!
What are the symptoms, and is it bad to have dry skin?
Dehydrated skin not only feels dry, but it may also look dull, have a grey or red tone and show lines, flakes or cracks. It might feel rough to touch or feel tight and taught.
When your skin is healthy, it works as a barrier, however dry skin means it’s less protective. When your skin is dry, not only does it look unhealthy but it can progress to feeling uncomfortable, itchy or even painful, and can lead to skin conditions such as sensitivity and dermatitis. Not to mention surface skin dehydration is also more prone to signs of premature aging – no thanks.
What causes dry skin?
Dry skin can happen at any age, although it is more common as you get older. Certain environmental factors can contribute to dehydrated skin, such as living in a dry climate (both hot or cold), too much UV sunlight, swimming often or sitting in a room with air conditioning or heating.
While some people naturally have dryer skin than others do, some factors that you can change may be contributing to your dry skin, for example, certain medications, very hot showers and baths, or using the wrong skincare products – particularly cleansers, which can strip your skin of natural oils.
How can I fix dry skin?
The first step to fixing dry skin is making sure you’re using the correct skincare. You’ll want a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip or dry the skin further, followed by hydrating serums and a very nourishing moisturiser, using products without fragrances and parabens to avoid irritation.
You’ll also want to make sure you’re getting enough essential fatty acids, which repair the skin by regulating oil flow (such as taking flaxseed or fish oil supplements, or by eating more nuts, seeds or fish) and drinking more water to ensure your whole body is hydrated.
