Pigmented Skin
If you’ve noticed patches of slightly darker skin on your face (or body), this is likely to be hyperpigmentation. Pigmentation comes in many forms, from freckles or sunspots that have expanded, liver spots, discolouration from a skin condition such as eczema, or hormonal melasma patches.
It’s common to have these blotchy dark patches on the nose, forehead, cheeks, chin, upper lip, neck or chest. Thankfully, these days there are a number of skincare ingredients to help reduce pigmentation and get you back to a clearer complexion.
What causes hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when an excess of melanin (the brown pigment that gives skin its colour) is produced and forms deposits in the skin. Hyperpigmentation can affect the skin colour of any skin type or ethnic background and can be caused by a variety of factors.
Melasma, larger patches of slightly darker skin, is often a result of hormonal changes such as pregnancy or the contraceptive pill. Skin conditions such as acne and eczema can leave dark patches, some pigmentation such as freckles and age spots are a hereditary condition. Most cases of pigmentation are caused (or worsened) by exposure to the sun’s UV rays in summer, which darkens these patches even more.
How can I fix pigmentation on my skin?
You’ll want a skin routine that contains active ingredients proven to help with lightening and brightening the skin and reducing pigmentation and melasma. Ingredients to look for include Vitamin B3 (niacinamide), Vitamin C (a skin lightening agent) and brightening actives to reduce deposition of melanin and pigmentation.
You’ll also want a gentle exfoliation at least once a week, which is helpful in breaking up pigmented cells and allowing them to fade. This can be done with either a scrub or a mildly exfoliating acid (a gentle at-home peel). One important factor will be preventing further pigmentation by using sun protection every day, even in winter.
Which products should I use for pigmentation?
We know pigmentation is a common skin concern, which is why years of research and proven results have allowed us to bring you active products to reduce all types of hyperpigmentation, from freckles to melasma. When trying new products, it’s best to introduce one product at a time, and gradually add new products into your routine to ensure you don’t have any adverse reactions. You’ll then be on your way to total skin confidence!
