Oily Skin

It’s great to have nourished skin that isn’t flaking off, but unfortunately, oily skin can be hard to manage, especially in the summer months, on nights out, or at the end of the day when your makeup has turned into a greasy mess. Shiny skin isn’t a great look! But what’s worse is that oily skin can also lead to congestion, acne, blackheads and clogged pores, and isn’t just limited to the face – often affecting the back and chest area too.

The skin care ingredients you’re using can have a huge impact on whether your skin improves or becomes even more oily and leads to breakouts, so you’ll want to make sure you’re using the right stuff.

How do I know if I have oily skin, and what causes it?

Does your skin feel waxy, allowing your fingers to slide easily over the forehead, nose and chin? If you often have shiny skin, this can indicate there is excess oil flow, particularly on the “T-Zone” area. This overabundance of oil is caused by sebaceous glands in the skin producing excess sebum (oil). This sebum can then mix with dead skin cells and get stuck in pores, which creates congestion and acne.

The most common causes of oily skin are hormones, including hormonal changes such as puberty and pregnancy, and genetics. Causes can also be external triggers such as environmental factors (hot, humid weather or exercising and sweating) or using skin care products that are too rich and oily.

How can I reduce the look of oily skin?

The first thing you’ll want to do is ensure you have a skincare routine to use day and night to gently cleanse your skin thoroughly, a serum with antioxidants, hydration and antibacterial properties, a moisturiser without too much oil and exfoliation for the skin once or twice a week.

You may think moisturiser can be skipped, but oil is different to hydration – by using ingredients such as hyaluronic acid you can balance the water and oil in the skin, which will help to control oil production. The same goes for scrubbing your skin dry or using harsh cleansers, which can strip and irritate the skin, causing it to produce even more oil. You’ll also want to scale back on heavy makeup so your skin can breathe, and instead opt for lighter and mattifying textures, or even just a mineral powder.

Which products should I use for oily skin?

Rebalancing oil production is the key for shiny skin, and O Cosmedics has just the ingredients to help. Start with a gentle cleanse, followed by a serum and balancing moisturiser morning and night, with retinol added in the evening, and an exfoliating scrub or enzyme fruit peel once or twice a week.
